Mortar is designed to give first. A wall built well has joints softer than its stones, so the small movements of a season spend themselves in the seam before they travel into the block. Engineers call this relief, a dry word for mercy. Trouble begins when a joint is made harder than the material it separates, since then movement has one route left and it takes that route through the thing meant to be protected.

Something of that order shapes the day. A system performed to its written limit, and the limit was the fault. In the same week, restraints come off an industry whose emissions will outlast every argument about them. Permission granted to the addicted and permission granted to the emitter share a signature while sharing nothing else. Licensing cuts both ways, and nobody has settled which way the season pays.

The Mercury square to Mars perfects within two days and lands wherever language does the work of force: a statement issued ahead of the evidence, a negotiation opened with affected allies held outside the room, a signature withheld. The withholding holds. Venus trine the North Node completes in the same window, so relief gets offered in the middle of the rupture and the offer is genuine, which sharpens the refusal of it.
