Tide Table for a Dry Country
Salt has climbed the river. Where the channel once ran sweet enough for cattle, the tide pushes in twice a day, and the same great oscillation that lifts the sea against the seawalls has drawn the highland streams down to gravel and standing pools, so a country floods at one end and cracks at the other from a single shift in the water of the Pacific, and nobody upstream and nobody on the coast meets these as one event, which is the difficulty the season keeps presenting.
The measuring has thinned. Gauges that fed a national forecast stand unstaffed, and the dispute over their funding was settled by removing the apparatus, and evaporation proceeds without a witness, and the water table drops by a hand’s width each season until the fall surfaces in household wells, where it arrives as a domestic fact rather than a public one.
Authority keeps arriving without its ratification, and its forms multiply. A chamber returns its members and produces no government, while a defeated heir addresses a crowd from foreign soil and declines to accept the count that removed him; in the same weather a roster of enforcement names escapes into open air, and a list of people becomes a cloud, and a cloud rains on every street it drifts across.
Venus✧, retrograde, perfects a trine to the north node, so a courtesy travels in the direction the world already leans, offered by a party that refused the identical courtesy a month ago, arriving without the weight of debt attached. Mercury✧, also retrograde, squares Mars✧ in Leo✧: a reply drafted before the question was asked, and the retraction moving slower than the original.
The Moon✧ in Cancer✧ squares Saturn✧ and stands across from Lilith, which sets tenderness against a sum closed weeks ago and seats the excluded figure directly in the room’s line of sight with no chair available to her.
A result will be certified by a body its opponents reject, and litigation follows within days. A second concession, quieter than the first, will be offered across a divided chamber and will take the shape of a committee seat or a pardon. Emergency water deliveries and coastal flood claims climb together through the waning light of this cycle, and the seasonal outlook for the Pacific will be published late, drawing on fewer stations than the year before.
