The Room You Can Still Heat
Close the door at the head of the stairs and leave it closed through the evening; heat the small room where the radiator sits under the window and let the rest of the house fall to whatever the walls will hold. Anyone who has paid a winter bill will quarrel with that instruction, and the quarrel is where the day lives, since the choosing has already begun in a great many kitchens while the argument about who pays for it continues in rooms with better chairs and worse insulation.
The moon✧ reaches her last quarter in the sign of the household while facing the planet of comfort across a hard angle, and the two facts refuse to resolve; warmth belongs to the body as a need and to the supplier as a figure on an invoice. Every household strategy invented this winter comes down to the same short inventory: a draft excluder under a door, a folded blanket on a sill, a kettle kept warm, a second pair of socks. Those are the instruments of a small and continuous negotiation that will keep meeting at right angles for a while yet.
A courtesy went out earlier in the direction the world is already leaning, and it keeps travelling after the hand that offered it has second thoughts, so legislatures that resent a transfer of fuel make it anyway and the motion outlives the mood. Repair gets offered at the same table where its price is quoted, and the refusal that follows reads as ingratitude to everyone except the person refusing, who has understood exactly what the offer would cost.
The blade went in several days ago, and what stays behind is the residue of the cut, an audio file circulating before anyone decided what it meant and a sentence spoken under the breath, repeated afterwards at full volume by somebody who heard it secondhand. Volume keeps being mistaken for agreement, the wide gesture keeps pulling against the lean direction of travel, and something gets set down on the road before the journey resumes.
What was sealed is changing hands, which makes the assumption that a lock was ever the obstacle look like the obstacle. Procedure does its clean work elsewhere, and correctness is what makes the closing feel unanswerable.
By morning a hand will turn a dial down one degree, resentfully, and by the end of the week that same reluctance will have converted itself into a floor vote.
